Lessons: Figure Drawing

I put these two longish videos together to explain some ideas about figure drawing. Being able to draw some basic forms really well is the pre-requisite for taking this approach to the figure.

The first video is all about the first few lines of a sketch (gesture). Gesture establishes a bunch of things at once: proportions, movement, balance, etc. The most important thing is to draw lightly and to not repeat your initial lines over and over.

The second video shows the overall quick sketch process with three examples. It works up each example stage by stage rather than each one all the way through. The emphasis here is on the process rather than the result. I find most problems in drawing come from not having a process, not following a process, or drifting back to old habits while thinking you’re following a process.
