Peter Oakley works at The Collective on Depot in the studio space next to mine, and he and I tend to be the ones who are there most often, lately. Here are some images from his show at Flanders Gallery in Raleigh, NC

Marble is his most common medium because of its permanence. He wants his carvings to last. There are a couple of ironies of his subject choices. In the soap bars, he's increasing the permanence of these objects, but in the to-go boxes, he's not necessarily creating any more permanence since styrofoam doesn't really biodegrade. The stack of to-go boxes is particularly interesting because of its transformation into architectural monumentality. I quite like the Caress bar because it's slightly larger than a normal soap bar, and the high polish makes the marble look wet.
